What to wear to my engagement shoot?

So, you already have your photographer and locations planned out for your engagement session, right? You are probably planning on what you're going to wear next.

But you feel stuck because you are not a fashion expert or you have no clue where to start..

Either way, no need to fret because I'm here to help.

Here are a few tips that could help you in planning your engagement outfits:

Stay true to yourself

Comfort is KEY! If you feel uncomfortable or don't like how you look in your clothing ehen looking in the mirror, it will definitely show on camera and will change your attitude at your session. Your personality should show up in the clothing you choose. Stick to what makes you feel good and who you are. Don't try to dress like you normally wouldn't. You won't feel confident or comfortable and that could be the worse thing of all.

Compliment, Don't Match

Focus on choosing colors that coordinate well instead of matching with one another. Matching can make your photos lack creativity and (in my opinion) can look pretty boring (just saying).

Complimenting one another with different color hues in the same color family can make a HUGE difference in your photos.

Example: choosing a bold bright color while your partner wears pastels is not the way to go.

Try this:

  • Choose a neutral base and then add pops of color in the same color hue. Solids work best.

  • Keep patterns small and minimal if choosing to go this route. Big patterns can be too busy and very distracting

Things to avoid:

  • Graphics or logos

  • Flip flops

  • T-shirts

  • Wrinkles in your clothing

  • Too baggy or too tight clothing

Dress for the season

You want to dress appropriately for the season climate. If it is hot, you don't want to be wearing long sleeves, right? If it's cold, it wouldnt be wise to wear short dresses. Be mindful of the weather and temperatures. Wearing the wrong thing could turn your session into misery quickly

Bring at least two outfits

Not only do two looks give you more variety but it also allows you to have more diversity. I usually recommend your two outfit choices to be casual and dressy. Casual allows for the more fun type of photos while dressy allows for you to look your best and get more of the formal intimate side.

Neutral & Earthy tones

Neutral and Earthy tones are always my favorite and what I suggest the most especially when being outdoors. You want to think about your surroundings. Of course you don't want to blend in bit you want to COMPLIMENT your surroundings.

Don't be afraid to accessorize

Accessories add amazing style to any outfit and can bring personality into your photos. Things such as necklaces, bracelets, watches, etc. Are all things that photograph well. Another thing that adds style is clothing layers especially for the gentlemen. Feel free to add some layers into the mix. Also, since it is your engagement session, getting some ring shots are a given so make sure that ring is nice and shiny for the camera too 😉

To add to this, ladies this is also a great opportunity for your hair and makeup trial with your Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist. By scheduling your bridal trial for your engagement session can be very beneficial for ypu to see what you like and don't like. You will also be able to see what your hair and makeup will look like on your wedding day plus it ensures you look your best for your portraits! WIN! WIN!!
